Time: Friday, July 2nd, 2021 19:00 hours, Euro Quarter Finals
The quarter finals are here with Switzerland and Spain meeting in Russia (St Petersburg Stadium) for this first set of matches. The Swiss against all odds managed to comeback from a two goal disadvantage to beat current holders France in a penalty shoot out and are looking for another big headline win. Spain are also coming from a crucial victory win against Croatia having drawn level during normal time (3-3), a goal from Alvaro Morata and Mikel sealing the win during extra time, ending in a (5-2) win against the Croatians. The Spanish side are obviously the favourites going into this clash but the Swiss side are looking to prove their last win wasn’t mere luck but the results of hard work and persistence. This article will take a look at head to head stats, team tactics, possible line up and finally match prediction.
This will be their first quarter final in a Euro Championship Tournament and are facing Spain for the first time in Euros. They have however faced them in the inaugural UEFA Nations League twice and once in the international friendly. The Swiss have managed to convert 25% of their shots on target (3/12) during the round 16 an impressive improvement from the previous 8.5% during the group stages (4/47). Manager Vladimir’s 3-4-1-2 has proven to be effective and with Xhaka out due to suspension in the clash against France, the coach is most likely to bring in Edimilson Fernandes to fill the void and retain the same formation.
Team formation: 3-4-1-2
Forwards; Haris Seferovic (CF) and Bree Embolo (CF).
Midfielders; Steven Zuber (LM) Edimilson Fernandes (CM) Remo Freuler (CM) Silvan Widmer (RB)
Defenders; Ricardo Rodriguez (CB) Manuel Akanji (CB) Nico Elvedi (CB)
Goalkeeper; Yann Sommer (GK).
Injuries/doubtful: Granit Xhaka is out due to automatic suspension.
La Roja’s Ferran Torres has been involved in 8 goals in the last 9 appearances for Spain in major tournaments (7 goals and 1 assist) and should he do so again, he will be the first Spanish player to score three goals in a row, having already scored in the last two matches in the Euro 2020 Tournament. This will be a must win for Spain with Luis Enrique men looking to lift the cup. All eyes will be on Morata, Ferran and Sarabia to cause problems to the Switzerland backline. Enrique’s side each time they have reached the finals they have managed to lift the trophy and are looking for a win in neutral grounds. The Spanish side should not underestimate the power of the underdog like France did and Luis despite securing a close win against Croatia in extra time. The Swiss have a tendency to comeback and are not easy to push around.
Team formation: 4-3-3
Forwards: Pablo Sarabia (RF) Alvaro Morata (CF) Ferran Torres (RF)
Injuries/doubtful players: No injuries or reported all players are in great shape to start.
